Labor Day Weekend in Oscoda: What to Do, When to Go

Labor Day weekend is the last big push of summer on Van Etten Lake. The water is still warm. The salmon run is starting in the Au Sable River. And Oscoda stays manageable in a way that other Up North destinations do not.

The Lake at Its Best

Van Etten Lake hits peak swimming temperature in late August and early September. The lake's 1,320 acres hold warmth longer than smaller inland lakes, and surface temps in the low-to-mid 70s are typical over Labor Day weekend. It's the best swimming of the year.

The dock at Oscoda Lakehouse puts you right on the water. Mornings are calm and clear — the best time for kayaking before the afternoon wind picks up. Four kayaks and a paddleboard are included with the house. Head north along the shoreline early, then come back for the afternoon swim crowd.

Boat traffic on Van Etten picks up over holiday weekends. Stick to the morning for paddling and leave the afternoon for the dock, the lake, and the firepit. The lake quiets down again by evening.

The Salmon Run Is Starting

The Chinook salmon run on the lower Au Sable typically begins in the last week of August and builds through September. Labor Day weekend often catches the first strong push of fish below Foote Dam. This is one of the best windows of the year to fish the Au Sable, and one of the most overlooked by people who haven't been to Oscoda in September.

The run happens at the mouth of the river where it meets Lake Huron, and in the stretch below Foote Dam. Shore fishing from the pier at the river mouth is productive when fish are staging. Wade anglers work the lower river below the dam. A guide trip is worth it if you've never done the salmon run here — the fish are big and the water clarity makes sight-fishing possible when conditions are right.

Van Etten Lake also fishes well over Labor Day. Bass are active before the fall turnover, and pike and walleye start to feed more aggressively as water temperatures begin to drop. The dock is a legitimate casting spot at first light.

Oscoda Beach and the River Mouth

Oscoda Beach on Lake Huron is a short drive from the lakehouse. The beach runs along the south side of the Au Sable River mouth — clean sand, clear water, and no admission fee. Labor Day weekend brings a crowd, but it's a Michigan beach crowd, not a resort scene. Arrive by 9 a.m. if you want a good spot without hassle.

The river mouth itself is worth a walk. Watch for salmon near the pier when the run is active. The north side of the river has a smaller beach that's less trafficked — a good option if the main beach is packed.

A Three-Day Framework

Saturday is the lake day. Start with an early kayak, swim after breakfast, spend the afternoon on the dock, and end at the firepit. Sunday works for off-water activities — Iargo Springs, Lumberman's Monument on the River Road Scenic Byway, or a round of golf at Lakewood Shores (8 minutes from the house) or Red Hawk in East Tawas (22 minutes). Monday morning is the best window for the Au Sable before the drive home — the river is quietest early, and the fish don't know it's a holiday.

A Few Practical Notes

Book the house early. Labor Day is one of the highest-demand weekends of the summer, and availability goes fast. Most seasonal restaurants in Oscoda stay open through the holiday but may shift hours or close the week after — call ahead if you have a specific dinner plan. US-23 northbound on Friday afternoon will have holiday traffic; leaving by noon or after 6 p.m. makes the drive smoother.
